1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS for sale on BaT Auctions – ending July 3 (Lot #198,877)

This 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS is one of a claimed 2,900 E-series examples produced through July 1974 and left the factory in November 1972 finished in Marrone Dino Metallizzato over beige Connolly leather. Chassis 04368 underwent an engine-out service in 2008 before being acquired by the selling dealer in 2015, with subsequent work including repainting the exterior in red and re-trimming the interior in black leather. The car rides on 14″ Cromodora five-lug alloy wheels and is powered by a 2.4-liter V6 equipped with triple Weber carburetors that is mated to a five-speed manual transaxle. A removable roof panel encloses the cabin, which houses Daytona-style seats accompanied by a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel and a gated shifter. Further equipment includes a JVC CD stereo as well as air conditioning and power windows. Recent work at Cauley Ferrari of Detroit in 2025 involved rebuilding the brake calipers and performing wiring repairs in addition to replacing an oil line, the transaxle access panel, and the shifter bushings. This E-series 246 is now offered by the selling dealer with Dino Compendium and Marcel Massini reports along with service records and an Ohio title listing the car as a 1973 model.

With bodywork designed by Aldo Brovarone and Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina, the prototype 206 GT first appeared at the 1965 Paris Auto Salon and was followed by revised concepts at the 1966 and 1967 Turin Motor Shows. The 2.0L 206 entered production in early 1968 and was later superseded by the 2.4L 246, which was offered in GT coupe and GTS targa-top variants beginning in 1969 and 1971, respectively.

The Scaglietti-built bodywork of this GTS example left the factory finished in Marrone Dino Metallizzato (106-M-73), and it was repainted in its current red finish under current ownership. The car features a removable black roof panel, and US-market lighting includes recessed rectangular front turn signals, side markers, and rear reflectors inboard of the taillights. A power antenna, dual side mirrors, chrome bumperettes, and quad exhaust outlets are further details.

The 14″ Cromodora five-lug alloy wheels wear Dino center caps and are mounted with 205/70 Michelin XWX tires with 2021 date codes. A matching spare wheel is stored in the front trunk. The suspension incorporates unequal-length A-arms, coilover shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars at front and rear, while stopping power is provided by power-assisted ventilated disc brakes all around. The brake calipers were rebuilt at Cauley Ferrari of Detroit in 2025.

The Daytona-style seats were re-trimmed in black leather and the dash was re-covered in Gray “mouse-fur” upholstery after 2015. A JVC CD stereo has been added, and further equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, and headrests mounted to the seatbacks. Various wiring and trim repairs were performed at Cauley Ferrari of Detroit in 2025. The seller notes that the driver-side window switch works intermittently.

The MOMO Prototipo steering wheel features a Dino horn button and is paired with a dogleg-pattern gated shifter. Dino-branded Veglia Borletti instrumentation consists of a tachometer with a 7,750-rpm redline as well as 170-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges for oil temperature, coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 47k miles, less than 100 of which have been added under current ownership.

The mid-mounted 2.4-liter Tipo 135CS V6 features a 65° angle between cylinder banks, dual overhead camshafts on each bank, Magneti Marelli ignition, and a trio of two-barrel Weber carburetors. An engine-out service was last performed in 2008. Work in 2025 at Cauley Ferrari of Detroit involved replacing an oil line, thermostat switch, and rubber airbox seal.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transaxle. Work in 2025 included replacing the transaxle access panel as well as the shifter bushings.

The Matthias Bartz Dino Compendium report notes a production date of November 6, 1972, and lists factory colors and identification numbers as well as the ownership history beginning in 1980. An accompanying Marcel Massini report can be viewed in the gallery along with included service records.

The Ohio title carries a “Replacement” notation and lists the car as a 1973 model.
