Beatles Fans “Will Benefit” From Biopics Ignorance

Paul Mescal is in the middle of a promising awards campaign for his latest movie, Chloé Zhao’s heartbreaking Hamnet, which just won the award for Best Drama Film at the 2026 Golden Globes. His downtime, though, is at a premium because of his role as Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’s quartet of Beatles biopics, which are set to be released in 2028. Speaking to Variety about The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, Mescal was reluctant to say much about becoming one of the Fab Four, saying that “I don’t want to get into the Beatles thing, not coyly, but actually because I think the world hopefully will benefit from knowing as little as possible going into it.”

Aside from hoping that people will be able to enjoy the story of the Beatles without knowing anything about the Beatles (a tough task, when you consider just how many Beatles documentaries exist), Mescal did confirm that production is ongoing: “We’re a while away from finishing. That’s my job for all of 2026.”

Mescal also told Variety that he and co-stars Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan are “pinching ourselves” over what he considers a “totally singular” endeavor, adding that “on a personal level, I’m so thrilled to be working on something at this scale, but also rooted in performance with Sam and great writers.” The cast for the biopics also includes Saoirse Ronan, James Norton, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Anna Sawai, Aimee Lou Wood, Harry Lloyd, David Morrissey, Leanne Best, Bobby Schofield, Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, Arthur Darvill, and Adam Pally.

Mescal is also currently involved with Richard Linklater’s adaptation of the musical Merrily We Roll Along, which is being filmed over the course of two decades with co-stars Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein. “The directors that I’m going to be working with this year — Sam Mendes and Richard Linklater — I’m like, I’m happy. At least I’ll be working on one thing for the next 20 years,” Mescal said. Meanwhile, the Beatles biopics are set to be released in theaters in April 2028.
