The Dodge driver lost control shortly after the chase began and things went downhill from there

  • Suspects tossed a bag with unknown contents while fleeing police.
  • Charger spun out twice and dragged a patrol car during the chase.
  • Driver fled on foot while passengers kept waving their hands outside.

Police chases happen all too often, but it’s rare for one to be as chaotic as what you’re about to see. A person behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger led Georgia State Police on a brief, but all-too-spicy chase through downtown Atlanta.

While he didn’t escape, the driver made it clear that he really didn’t want to go to jail that night. It turns out that a lot of horsepower is far from enough to escape some officers of the law.

The video below that was shared on YouTube shows GSP Trooper Matthews’ attempt to pull over the aforementioned Dodge Charger with a driver who decided to run.

The officer believed the fleeing car was “either a Scat Pack or a Hellcat widebody,” which explains why the suspect immediately put several car lengths of daylight (or perhaps moonlight in this case) between himself and the patrol unit.

Moments later, Matthews reported the occupants had tossed a “very large bag” out of the window, something he believed to be cocaine.

A Whole Lot of Car, No Plan

The chase continued at high speed toward North Ave NW, where the Charger lost control and spun out for the first time. Matthews attempted a PIT maneuver as the Dodge came to a halt. Passengers threw their hands out the windows in surrender, but the driver had other plans.

He stomped the throttle, scraping and dragging his car across the trooper’s front bumper before darting up an on-ramp against the flow of traffic, forcing the pursuit into a dangerous reset.

Once the driver bailed into surface streets, Matthews managed a second PIT. The Charger spun again, slammed a curb, and came to rest. Passengers once more put their hands out, but the driver bolted.

Why Keep Running?

And this is where things go from typical to cartoonish. After fleeing on foot and disappearing behind a building, the driver inexplicably circled back around and reappeared from the exact same corner.

He then ran straight toward the Charger as if he planned to hop back in and relaunch the entire chase. What he didn’t count on, evidently, was the presence of another officer already covering the vehicle. The moment is cut off from view, but audio confirms what happened next: he got tased.

So far, no official details have been released about the suspects, the discarded bag, or injuries. But the pursuit offers yet another reminder that massive horsepower, and the Charger has plenty of it, is only an advantage when the person behind the wheel has the discipline and competence to control it. Here, the power only prolonged the chaos.
