The car that gave Michael Schumacher his first Formula 1 victory is now up for auction after decades in storage and a recent restoration

- Schumacher took his first F1 win in this Benetton B192 car.
- He drove chassis 05 in Canada, France, Hungary, and Belgium.
- Car was restored, then sold to current owner back in 2016.
A car tied to one of Formula 1’s most iconic milestones is heading to auction, and for collectors, this one carries particular weight. It’s not from Michael Schumacher’s dominant Ferrari years, nor is it the flashiest machine ever to grace the paddock.
However, this 1992 Benetton B192 holds something far rarer: the distinction of being the car in which Schumacher clinched his first Grand Prix victory. Now, it could sell for more than €8.5 million (around $9.97 million).

Benetton introduced the B192 at the 1992 Spanish Grand Prix, and it proved competitive immediately. Schumacher raced this car, chassis 05, at the Canadian Grand Prix, securing fifth-place in qualifying and finishing second in the race.
He repeated his fifth-place qualifying effort in France, though the race itself ended in disappointment, with a distant 20th-place finish.
Schumacher was back in 05 again for the Hungarian Grand Prix, though mechanical issues meant he didn’t make it to the finish. Then came the Belgian Grand Prix in late August. Conditions were chaotic, the track soaked, visibility low. But Schumacher saw what others didn’t.
He gambled on a set of slick tires while the surface was still drying and made it work, snatching his maiden Formula 1 victory just a year after his debut in the sport.
Broad Arrow Auctions
Obviously, any F1 car driven by Michael Schumacher is special, but having the chance to own the car in which he claimed his first victory is bound to excite many wealthy collectors. The B192 was designed by the likes of Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne, equipped with a Ford-sourced naturally-aspirated V8 and a six-speed manual transmission.
Broad Arrow Auctions is handling the sale of the car later this month. After B192-05 was retired from racing, it remained at Renault’s headquarters and formed part of the team’s Classic Department collection until 2015.
That year, it was sold to LRS Formula, who carried out a full restoration, including a complete engine overhaul and gearbox rebuild. The car changed hands once more in 2016, this time to its current private owner.
