The 2005 movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin made a comedy star out of Steve Carell and confirmed Judd Apatow as a comedy hitmaker, and 20 years later, Universal is releasing a new 4K Ultra HD disc to celebrate the film’s legacy. In addition, the film is returning to theaters from August 22nd to 28th, along with Apatow’s Trainwreck, as the Amy Schumer-starring comedy reaches its 10th anniversary.
In The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Carell played an electronics store employee who, as the title reveals, hasn’t had a very active sex life during his four decades on the planet. But, with some help from his co-workers/friends — an incredible ensemble including Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, and Jane Lynch — as well as the very patient GILF Trish (Catherine Keener), he’s able to make some big changes.
The new 4K Ultra HD release of The 40-Year-Old Virgin includes a new bonus feature: A filmed discussion from the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, in which Apatow and cast members Carell, Keener, Lynch, Kat Dennings, and Gerry Bednob reflected on the film’s legacy after 20 years. The release also includes both the theatrical and unrated versions of the movie, with a special SteelBook edition also available for a limited time.
