This Chevrolet CERV I Replica Is A Blast From The Past

  • A replica of the Chevrolet CERV I is going up for auction later this month.
  • The model mimics the original, but uses an alternative design and some modern gear.
  • The single seat car has a 6.4-liter V8 and a four-speed manual transmission.

The Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle lineup is still fondly remember today and it got its start in 1959 with the CERV I. Designed by the godfather of the Corvette, Zora Arkus-Duntov, it was a futuristic prototype that focused on ride and handling.

} else {

}
});

While the original was sold by Barrett-Jackson for over $1 million, this replica is surprisingly faithful to it and was built by the son of a former employee who worked on the real car. It wears a handmade fiberglass body, which is based on one of the earlier CERV I designs proposed by Larry Shinoda and Tony Lapine.

This means the car mirrors the CERV I but features a unique front and rear end. The model is also painted Snowcrest White and sports contrasting Frost Blue Poly accents.

The single seat interior looks cramped, but it has two-tone upholstery as well as a Corvair-sourced steering wheel. They’re joined by a white ball shifter as well as toggle switches and digital gauges that are at odds with the old school aesthetic.

Mecum

The replica rides on a tubular chassis and features a “rebuilt and modified” early Corvette suspension out back. The front goes in a different direction with a period correct Corvair suspension and steering system.

Power is provided by a 6.4-liter V8 with aluminum heads, forged pistons, and an electric fuel injection system from Holly. There’s no word on how much the engine produces, but it is mated to a four-speed manual.

The replica will be auctioned off by Mecum on March 21, but there’s no estimate and it’s hard to put a price on something so unique.
